I love almond butter for its rich flavor and nutritional benefits, but store-bought jars can be expensive. I discovered that making almond butter at home is simple, far more affordable, and yields a fresher taste.
Homemade almond butter is:
- Easy to prepare
- Less expensive than most store brands
- Fresher and more flavorful
These three advantages make a strong case for making almond butter yourself. You can use either a food processor or a high-quality blender. Lower-end machines may take longer or struggle, but reliable models such as high-performance food processors, Blendtec, or Vitamix handle the job much better.
Store your finished almond butter in a Mason jar or similar airtight container to keep it fresh. The jars shown in the images work well and make the butter easy to store and serve.

Homemade Almond Butter

Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups toasted almonds
- pinch of salt
Instructions
-
Place the toasted almonds into the bowl of a food processor or blender.
-
Pulse or blend, letting the machine grind the nuts. Pause every couple of minutes to scrape down the sides so everything processes evenly.
-
After about 15 minutes in a food processor (less time in a high-powered blender), the nuts will release their oils and the texture will start to change.
-
Continue processing until the mixture becomes smooth and creamy, usually around 20–30 minutes in a food processor or much faster in a strong blender.
Notes
If using a Vitamix, start at a high variable speed and use the tamper to push the almonds toward the blades as needed. Blend until the almond butter reaches a creamy texture, usually under a minute with a powerful machine.
