DIY Soy Wax Candle Gift Ideas for the Perfect Hostess Present

Last week while out to dinner I turned to my husband and said, “We need more candles.” I’d just visited a public restroom that felt more like a tiny spa: soft music, a little heater, and the most wonderful scented candle filling the air. It was so warm and comforting I almost wanted to lock the door and take a nap. Maybe it’s no surprise—I do have a bit of a thing for candles. They’re simple to make, customizable, and when wrapped in a scrap of old t-shirt (bonus points if it looks like peppermint) they become an ideal hostess gift.

Perfect Hostess Gift! DIY Soy Wax CandlesStep 1

Secure the wick to the bottom of the tin with a dab of glue. Wrap the top of the wick around a pencil or skewer to keep it centered and upright. If you don’t have enough wick length to wrap, you can hold it in place while pouring the wax.

Step 2

Melt the soy wax—either in the microwave in 30-second intervals or using a double boiler—until fully liquid. Add 8–10 drops of essential oil and stir. Start with fewer drops and increase to reach your preferred scent strength.

Step 3

Carefully pour the melted wax into the tin, keeping the wick centered. Let the candle cool and harden for several hours.

Step 4

Finish by covering the tin with a circle of fabric and tying it with twine. Attach a simple tag to let the recipient know the fragrance inside.

These soy wax candles are quick to make, customizable with any essential oil blend, and a thoughtful, handmade present for friends and hosts. Because soy wax burns cleaner and lasts longer than some alternatives, it’s an ideal choice for at-home candle projects. Experiment with combinations like lavender and vanilla for relaxation, citrus and rosemary for an uplifting kitchen scent, or peppermint and eucalyptus for a fresh, cool aroma. Small tins make them easy to store and gift, and thoughtful wrapping turns a simple candle into a memorable gift.
